Developing A Constitution

A constitution is the single most important element that will maintain and strengthen your program.  Every program and constitution is different.  Your constitution is the basis and foundation of your team.

Although a constitution gives guidance to your program, make sure that your policies and procedures coincide with your district’s policies and procedures.  Be sure that your administration approves your draft copy before publishing it.

A constitution is always a work in progress.  Don’t be afraid to put up an “under construction” sign on your constitution!  Every team is different, therefore you should always adapt your constitution to your team’s specific needs.

When developing a constitution, cover every aspect of your program.  This is to avoid conflict and be assured that everyone (participants, parents, etc.) understands everything about your program.  There are two ways of developing your constitution:

1. Committee: Can consist of the coach, parent representative, administrative representative and a dancer (probably a graduating senior).
2. Coach: Be sure to have administrative (principals, athletic director, etc.) approval before implementing your constitution.
